Krishen Khanna

Krishen Khanna

Krishen Khanna (1925–2021) was a prominent Indian artist known for his figurative paintings that explore human experiences, history, and social realities. Born in Faislabad and raised in Lahore, he was deeply affected by the Partition of India, and the memories of displacement and upheaval became important themes in his early works.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Khanna chose to focus on human figures rather than abstraction. His paintings capture individuals within specific social and historical situations, portraying their struggles, emotions, and resilience. His expressive brushwork, vivid colours, and narrative style transform ordinary moments into powerful visual stories.

A largely self-taught artist, Khanna became associated with the Progressive Artists' Group and exhibited widely in India and abroad. His contributions to Indian art were recognised through honours including the Padma Shri and Lalit Kala Ratna. He lived and worked in New Delhi.
