Paritosh Sen

Paritosh Sen

Paritosh Sen (1918–2008) was a prominent Indian painter, illustrator, writer, and teacher known for his expressive portrayal of human figures and urban life. His works are recognised for strong lines, bold stylised strokes, and influences from Western modern art, particularly Cubism.

Sen often explored socio-political themes through caricatures, everyday city scenes, and depictions of the human body. His female figures and nudes reflect his interest in emotions, form, and human experiences, while his structured compositions balance abstraction with representation.

He studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, and later co-founded the Calcutta Group in 1942, which aimed to bring modern approaches into Indian art. He further studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, strengthening his engagement with international modernism.

Sen exhibited widely across India and abroad and also contributed through his writings in Bengali and English.
