Prakash Kormakar

Prakash Kormakar

Prokash Karmakar (1933–2014) was a prominent Indian painter from Kolkata, known for his expressive landscapes and figurative works. His paintings are characterised by vibrant colours, bold outlines, and rich textures that reveal his distinctive visual language.

Karmakar explored the relationship between nature, human life, and form through his art, portraying both rural and urban environments with emotional depth. His landscapes often capture the harmony and disorder of nature, while his nudes focus on the human figure as a study of movement, expression, and existence.

Rather than following religious themes, his works were rooted in personal perception and observation, reflecting the complexity of life and surroundings. His use of strong colours and dynamic compositions created a balance between softness and intensity.

His artworks are part of important collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and he received several awards for his contribution to Indian art.
