Shuvaprasanna, born in Kolkata in 1947, is a prominent contemporary Indian artist whose work is deeply connected to the cultural and social landscape of the city. A graduate of the Indian College of Art, Kolkata, he was also an active member of the “Calcutta Painters” group. Kolkata remains the central inspiration behind his artistic practice, with his paintings reflecting the city’s struggles, emotions, conflicts, and everyday realities.

His works explore themes of urban life, human vulnerability, political unrest, and the changing identity of the city. Although rooted in reality, his paintings often contain dreamlike and symbolic elements, creating a poetic interpretation of society. Working across mediums such as oil, charcoal, and mixed media, Shuvaprasanna creates visually intense compositions with refined technique.

His later series, Icons and Illusions, introduced spiritual and symbolic imagery, featuring figures such as Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha through a contemporary lens. His works have been exhibited widely in India and internationally.
