Suman Roy

Suman Roy

Suman Roy, son of renowned artist Suhas Roy, was shaped by the artistic and philosophical environment of Santiniketan, West Bengal. Growing up amidst simplicity, harmony, and nature, he developed an artistic language rooted in observation and emotional expression. His early works, created during his years at Kala Bhawan, reflected the moods, rhythms, and beauty of the natural world.

After moving to Kolkata, Roy’s focus shifted towards human presence and introspection. His paintings often explored solitary male figures, using them as a medium to examine contemporary life, identity, and the relationship between artist and viewer. He believed that art should communicate directly and that excessive technical complexity could distract from genuine expression.

Known for his simplicity of form and emotional depth, Roy sought to create works that connected with universal human experiences. His notable Christ series reflected his spiritual and philosophical concerns. Despite his short life, Suman Roy created a distinctive body of work before his passing in 2012 at the age of 44.
