About Jogen Chowdhury

Jogen Chowdhury, born in Faridpur, Bengal in 1939, is a major figure in Indian modern art known for blending traditional imagery with contemporary expression. His work combines Bengali cultural influences with an urban awareness, creating a unique visual language centered on human figures and emotional states.

Chowdhury’s paintings often explore themes of social unrest, identity, and human vulnerability, influenced by experiences of Partition, famine, and political movements in Bengal. His stylized figures, dark tones, and intricate line work create a sense of mystery and psychological depth. Over time, his compositions became more subtle and personalized, often cropping figures to emphasize details and evoke curiosity.

Rejecting imitation of Western trends, Chowdhury believes in an authentic Indian approach to art. Trained in Kolkata and Paris, he has received several honours, including the Prix le France de la Jeune Peinture and Kalidas Samman. His work continues to shape contemporary Indian artistic expression.
