About Badri Narayan
Badri Narayan (1929–2013) was a self-taught Indian artist known for his narrative and symbolic paintings. Born in Secunderabad, he developed a lifelong interest in storytelling, which became central to his artistic practice. His works often reflect personal introspection, autobiography, Indian mythology, and cultural imagery.
Narayan’s paintings invite viewers to interpret layered stories through symbolic compositions and poetic titles. Influenced by Indian miniature traditions, he preferred small-format works, especially watercolours, while also exploring etchings, woodcuts, ceramics, and book illustrations. His imagery drew naturally from the cultural environment around him, incorporating metaphors and familiar icons.
With over five decades of artistic practice, Narayan held numerous solo and group exhibitions in India and internationally. His work remains recognised for its imaginative storytelling, delicate visual language, and deep connection to Indian traditions.
