About Himmat Shah
Himmat Shah, born in Lothal, Gujarat in 1933, is a significant figure in Indian modern art known for his sculpture, drawing, and experimental practices. Growing up near the remains of the Indus Valley Civilization influenced his connection with history, material, and ancient forms. He studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art and later at Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where he was influenced by artists such as N. S. Bendre and K. G. Subramanyan.
A member of Group 1890, Shah explored new artistic languages through etching, murals, terracotta, plaster, and bronze. His iconic heads in terracotta and bronze reveal his fascination with human form and timeless expressions. Through continuous experimentation, he has expanded the possibilities of sculpture and remains an important voice in Indian contemporary art.
