About K G Subramanyan
K. G. Subramanyan (1924–2016) was a significant figure in Indian modern art, known for his contributions as a painter, sculptor, and educator. Born in Kuthuparamba, Kerala, he studied economics before becoming involved in India’s freedom movement and developing a strong connection with Gandhian philosophy.
His artistic journey began at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University in 1944, where he studied under influential artists such as Nandalal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee, and Ramkinkar Baij. He later taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda, and returned to Santiniketan as a professor.
Through his career, Subramanyan explored Indian folk traditions, craft practices, and modern artistic ideas. His work bridged tradition and experimentation, making him one of the most influential voices in Indian contemporary art.
